Fall has arrived, and with it, it’s arsenal of trademark flavors that I can’t wait to get into. One of which would be apples. I recently went apple picking, and was pleased with the shiny Jonathan’s and empire apples that I brought back home that afternoon. Now a girl can only eat so many apples with peanut butter before she is looking for an alternative way to use the $15 plus of apples (I went a little crazy). Being so, I played around in my kitchen, and created these little delights. They’re perfectly portion controlled so you don’t feel like you’re ruining your whole day, but you also won’t feel guilty for popping a few in your mouth. If you need even more motivation to eat apples- overall they have tons of fiber to keep you full, they’re a great low calorie snack, they have tons of butt-kicking antioxidants, and vitamin C as the seasons change and you ward off any bug that tries to get in your way.
Won-ton Hand Apple Pies
1 can of PILLSBURY (look for name) dough sheets
1 Medium apple, peeled and diced (I used Jonathan)
2 tsp cinnamon
1 T white sugar
1 T brown sugar
2 tsp salt
2 T lemon juice, freshly squeezed of course!
1 T white flour
1 T butter (optional)
Preheat oven according to dough packaging. Combine all the ingredients minus the dough, and butter in a bowl and mix, set aside. Then, roll out dough and cut into 1 ½-2 inch squares. Place about a tablespoon or so (you’ll get the hang of how much to use if whether there’s too much dough or the filling is ripping the dough) filling in the center, and like making a wonton, fold the dough across diagonally to create a ‘triangle’. Pinch the sides closed, and then bring the two ends together and pinch as well to make a “won ton” shape. Place upright on a baking sheet *and put in the oven for about 12 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. Feel free to substitute some of the sugar with Truvia, stevia, etc. using the conversions on their respective websites.
* If you’d like to brush some butter on top and sprinkling some cinnamon sugar on top before putting them into the oven, feel free. Some say it adds more calories, others say it adds more oomph. I’ll let you decide.
The Wonton hand apple pies have been ‘roommate approved’ for deliciousness, and they are easy enough for any busy individual to recreate to satiate that apple pie desire if they’re feeling homesick- minus the extra time and hassle.
