When you think of beauty products, surely you don’t think of household cleaning products, right? Wrong. Baking soda is a household staple known for cleaning, absorbing odors and much more. However, it isn’t just for those smelly foods in your fridge or for clothing stains, it is a multi-purpose beauty ingredient as well. You can easily zap zits, soothe a sun burn, and even cure an upset stomach with this amazing multi-tasker.
Getting a tan is great but getting a sun burn isn’t. To soothe that painful burn, take a clean washcloth and soak it in a bowl with four tablespoons of baking soda and one quart of water. Take the washcloth and leave it on the affected area for a few minutes. Let it air dry. For a more relaxing method, you can add half a cup of baking soda to a warm bath and soak in it. The baking soda will neutralize and cool down the affected areas, while helping the skin retain moisture.
Is your skin looking a little, well, blah? Not to worry, with just a bit of baking soda, your skin will glow and feel incredibly soft. Not only that, but you can get rid of streaks from self-tanners as well. Mix three parts baking soda to one part water in a bowl. Use your fingers to gently rub the mixture in circular motions onto your face and leave on as a mask for about five minutes. For self-tanning disasters, repeat the motions until the streaks are not visible. To easily zap away those pesky zits, replace the water in your mixture with lemon juice. Use this mixture as a spot treatment and your zits will quickly dry up and disappear.
To relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, or an upset stomach, completely dissolve half a teaspoon baking soda to half a glass of water and drink immediately (always consult with your physician first before performing these actions). You should feel relief within 10-15 minutes. The baking soda soothes the stomach and this remedy can be repeated after three hours if the problem persists.
If you’re teeth need an extra boost, mix your own toothpaste with baking soda. Simply add your toothpaste to your toothbrush, and sprinkle some baking soda on top. Brush as you normally would and voila, your teeth will shine. You can also make your own toothpaste. Mix about half a teaspoon of three percent hydrogen peroxide with one teaspoon of baking soda. Dip your toothbrush into the paste and brush. When baking soda is dissolved in water, it penetrates tooth enamel and helps scrape off yellow or brown stains that build up over the years. Baking soda also removes plaque, helping to prevent tooth decay and to refresh your breath.
Baking soda can be used in several ways besides sitting in your refrigerator. By using baking soda as a swap for other products, you can save a ton of money, and also protect yourself from the numerous toxins and chemicals in other products. It’s a simple product, but one that has extensive effects for many tasks.
